BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech’s 47th-ranked women’s tennis team took down the Pittsburgh Panthers 6-1 on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Panthers dropped their first ACC match in the trip to Blacksburg.
Tech tallied the doubles point to start the day. Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar took the No. 3 doubles match 8-4 over Lolada Ogungbesan and Molly Wickman.
Pitt evened the doubles contest as Audrey Ann Blakely and Amanda Wickman topped Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford 8-5 at No. 2.
The doubles point was decided with an overturned call by the chair umpire at No. 1, which gave Francesca Fusinato and Raluca Mita the 8-4 win over Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington.
Stoica bounced back after dropping her doubles match to win convincingly at No. 2. She defeated Blakely 6-0, 6-1 to give the Hokies an early 2-0 lead.
Stoica’s doubles partner Williford was also able to contribute a point to the Hokie effort as she stretched the Tech lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Ogungbesan at No. 3.
Fusinato battled to an 8-6 win in the first-set tiebreak and rode that momentum to a 6-3 second set win to take the No. 1 singles match over Washington and give the Hokies the victory.
Isel Martinez-Marcos followed that up with a win of her own at No. 4. She defeated Katherine Castro 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4.
Pitt did get on the scoreboard, though, as Amanda Wickman won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 over Mita at No. 5.
Carol Kahoun finished off the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (6) win over Molly Wickman at No. 6.
The Hokies return to action Sunday morning as they take on No. 11 Clemson in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at 11 a.m.
