No. 54 Tech falls to No. 28 Tulsa

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 54 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 28 Tulsa on Sunday in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by the University of Michigan.

Tulsa grabbed the early 1-0 lead with two wins in doubles. Rongrong Leenabanchong and Maria Sant’Anna clinched the point for the Golden Hurricane with their defeat of Francesca Fusinato and Ilinca Stoica 7-5 at No. 2.

Tulsa’s first doubles win was at No. 3 as Renata Kuricova and Yelena Namchen took down Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 7-5.

The Golden Hurricane extended their lead to 2-0 as Sant’Anna defeated Raluca Mita 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

However, Isel Martinez-Marcos scored her second point of the weekend for Tech with her 6-3, 6-0 win over Saana Saarteinen at No. 5.

Tulsa answered with Marcelina Cichon’s 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Nandakumar at No. 6.

The Hokies didn’t let the match slip away quickly, though, as Fusinato tallied her third win of the season with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (6) win over Isaura Enrique at No. 2.

The match was decided in favor of Tulsa when Samantha Vickers won 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10) over Stoica at No. 1.

The No. 3 singles match between Kelly Williford and Yelena Namchen was in a third-set tiebreak when the match was decided.

The Hokies return to the court at William & Mary on Friday, January 31 at 6 p.m.
