ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The No. 54 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the No. 11 Michigan Wolverines 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Michigan.
Michigan took the doubles point from the Hokies to start the day. Sarah Lee and Amy Zhu defeated Tech’s Francesca Fusinato and Ilinca Stoica 6-4 at No. 2 before the Wolverines captured the point with Kristen Dodge and Laura Ucros’ win over Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nandakumar 6-4 at No. 3.
The Wolverines extended their lead as 21st-ranked Emina Bektas defeated Stoica 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. Michigan’s Kristy Dodge defeated Carol Kahoun 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 before Michigan clinched the match with Brooke Bolender’s win over Kelly Williford at No. 3.
Isel Martinez-Marcos got the Hokies on the board with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sara Remynse at No. 5. However, Michigan tallied two more late points with wins at No. 2 and 4.
Lee, ranked No. 100, defeated No. 82 Fusinato 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (8) at No. 2, and Zhu topped Raluca Mita 6-2, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (1) at No. 4.
The Hokies return to action tomorrow morning in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend against either Yale or Tulsa in Ann Arbor.
