BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up the Hokie Fall Invite held over the weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Junior Carol Kahoun and sophomore Raluca Mita each finished in third place in their respective brackets.
The final day of the invite began with doubles play, and Frances Peyton/ Laura Ramthun started the day off with a win in the back draw of Flight B, defeating Radford’s Allison Michael/ Taylor Fay, 8-7 (2). In Flight A action the draw was altered to avoid same-team competition and Kahoun/ Mita came up with an 8-5 win over Marshall’s Karli Timko/ Anne Gulsrud. Isel Martinez-Marcos and Tea Ivanovic battled to the end with Marshall’s Dana Oppinger/ Rachael Morales but eventually came up short, falling 8-7 (8).
In singles action, Ramthun took it to three sets to defeat Gisela Garcia of Radford, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (3), in Flight C play. Kahoun earned a third-place finish in Flight B when she defeated Pittsburgh’s Amanda Wickman, 6-2, 6-2. Ivanovic played in the consolation finals in Flight B and fell to Liberty’s Mariely Hassey, 7-5, 6-1.
Mita added another third-place victory for the Hokies when she knocked off Liberty’s Maria Khval, 6-4, 6-4 in Flight A. After a long doubles match to begin the day, Martinez-Marcos looked to avenge the lengthy loss against Marshall’s Oppinger, but after dropping the first set, she gave it everything she had but was unable to overcome her opponent, eventually falling 6-3, 7-6 (6).
The Hokies return to action next weekend, Oct. 4-6, as they travel to New Haven, Conn., for the Bulldog Invite.
