BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up day two of the Hokie Fall Invite at the Burrow-Burleson Tennis Center. The three-day tournament saw two rounds of doubles and a round of singles play in its second day of action.

Two rounds of doubles play began the day, and while both of Tech’s teams in Flight A dropped their first matches, they bounced back and will battle for fifth place on the final day of the invite. Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos defeated Marshall’s Timko/ Gulsrud, 8-1, to advance, while Raluca Mita and Carol Kahoun topped Marshall’s Dana Oppinger/ Rachael Morales, 8-4, after a lengthy quarterfinals match to start the day.

Ivanovic got the Hokies out to a good start in singles play as she brought home the first win of the day. She knocked off Liberty’s Cameron Richard, 6-1, 6-4, in consolation Flight B action. Soon after Martinez-Marcos kept things rolling as she came from behind to defeat Liberty’s Maria Khval, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, and advance to the Flight A finals.

Mita had a chance to face her teammate in the Flight A finals, but dropped the match, 6-2, 6-4, to Marshall’s Oppinger. Mita will face Khval to play for third place on the final day of the invitational.

Kahoun will also compete for third place, but in the Flight B bracket, after falling to Pittsburgh’s Audrey Ann Blakely, 6-3, 6-3.

The Hokie Fall Invite will conclude Sunday with the final round for singles and double in all of the flights. Play will begin with doubles at 9 a.m. and be followed by singles play.
