BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team opened play Friday at the annual Hokie Fall Invitational. The seven-team, three-day tournament kicked off with the opening round of doubles play and two rounds of singles play. Through the three singles flights and two doubles flights, there are six Hokies participating in this weekend’s action.

In Flight A action, sophomore Raluca Mita picked up a pair of early victories for the Hokies. She defeated Rebekah Jenkins of Liberty in the first round (6-1,6-2) and later advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over James Madison’s Taylor Pinchoff. Senior Isel Martinez-Marcos was also playing in Flight A and after a first-round bye, she knocked off Marshall’s Kai Broomfield, 6-2, 6-3.

Junior Carol Kahoun brought home another Hokie win when she defeated Radford’s Grace Sarver 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of matches and tacked on another when she defeated VCU’s Sitilia Rencheli, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Tea Ivanovic fell to JMU’s Rachel Nelson, 7-5, 6-2, but bounced back later in the day when she defeated Radford’s Meg Napolitano, 6-1, 6-0.

Sophomores Frances Peyton and Laura Ramthun were in action for the Hokies in Flight C. Ramthun picked up Tech’s first singles win of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Radford’s Allison Michael, but fell in the second round to Liberty’s Brittany Yang, 6-3, 6-1. Peyton dropped her first-round match to Liberty’s Valerie Thong, 6-1, 6-0, and later fell to Radford’s Taylor Fay, 6-2, 6-0.

Martinez-Marcos and Ivanovic paired up in Flight A doubles play and knocked off Taylor Washington and Amanda Wickman of Pittsburgh, 8-3. Mita and Kahoun were also in that flight but received a first-round bye. The pairing of Peyton/ Ramthun fell in their opening Flight B match, 8-2, to Pittsburgh’s Katherine Castro/ Molly Wickman.

All six Hokies will be in action as the Invite continues tomorrow at the Burrow-Burleson Tennis Center. Saturday’s action will see two rounds of doubles play beginning at 9 a.m., and singles matches will start at 11 a.m.
