“We are very excited for Freddy to rejoin our team this fall,” Zawacki-Woods said. “His enthusiasm for the game of tennis, previous experience with our student-athletes and familiarity with our overall program make him an ideal fit for the position. We look forward to Freddy and his wife Julie returning to Blacksburg.”
Gomez served as an assistant at Tech from 2010-2012, departing for Louisiana during the fall of 2012. During his two seasons with the Hokies Gomez helped the Hokies to multiple upsets over ranked opponents, while also assisting in the recruitment of the 2012 freshman class that ranked No. 16 in the country.
As the head coach at Louisiana Tech Gomez spearheaded an impressive effort that saw the Techsters finish third in the Western Athletic Conference, their best-ever finish. The squad put together a 15-5 record on the year and Gomez placed four players on the All-WAC Team, while also working to bring in the eventual WAC Freshman of the Year last season.
“I'm extremely excited to return to such a special team and place like ours at Virginia Tech,” Gomez said. “I consider the Hokies part of my family, and I look forward to continue our momentum and success.”
