
LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Three members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team competed in the Liberty Fall Tournament this weekend. Freshman Rebecca Harris took fourth in Flight 5 singles, while sophomore Laura Ramthun took fifth in Flight 6 singles.
Harris defeated Brooke Byrd from Christopher Newport 6-1, 6-1 in her first match. She fell to Sarah King of James Madison 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (4) but bounced back against Mason Thomas from Longwood and won 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (7).
Ramthum dropped her opening match to Annisha Domenech from Liberty 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8), but she also battled back to defeat Angela Stallman from Christopher Newport 6-3, 6-3 in her final match of the weekend.
Frances Peyton also traveled to Liberty and competed in Flight 7 singles, but fell in her first match before winning her final match of the weekend as her opponent retired with Peyton leading 4-1 in the first set.
Harris and Ramthun teamed up in doubles play, as well. They defeated Jordan Kerns and Charlotte Sandy from West Virginia State 8-4 for their only win of the weekend.
The Hokies return to action September 27 as they host the Hokie Fall Invite in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg.
