Hokies open fall season at Liberty Fall Tournament
Mita and Stoica open season nationally ranked

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech’s women’s tennis team travels to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. this weekend to open up its fall 2013 campaign. Play at the Liberty Fall Tournament begins on Friday and continues on Saturday.

The Hokies kick off the year with two players ranked in preseason ITA rankings. Sophomores Ilinca Stoica and Raluca Mita enter the fall season ranked No. 112 and No. 121, respectively.

Alongside Stoica and Mita, the Hokies return three other sophomores in Frances Peyton, Laura Ramthun and Kelly Williford. Williford played in 25 matches and tallied 13 wins for the Hokies last spring.

Freshmen doubles team of Stoica and Williford ended the spring season ranked No. 6 in the ITA Atlantic region after winning 13 matches at No. 1 doubles.

Tech also returns seniors Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos, as well as lone junior Carol Kahoun. All of Tech’s upperclassmen played a significant role in last year’s spring season as they combined for 35 singles wins.

The Hokie’s freshmen Francesca Fusinato, Rebecca Harris and Sansitha Nandakumar will see their first action on collegiate tennis.

Tech is looking to carry over the momentum of last year’s upset of No. 14 Duke in the ACC Tournament into this year’s play. The Hokies took down three ranked opponents last spring, two of which were conference matches.

Tech returns to Blacksburg to host the Hokie Fall Invite on Sept. 27-29 in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
