BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 68 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Miami got out to a quick start in doubles play as Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente topped Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos 8-1 at No. 3. The Hurricanes claimed the point at No. 1 as Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno fended off a comeback from Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford to win 8-5.
Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita were leading Deborah Suarez and Stephanie Wagner 6-5 at No. 2 when the doubles point was decided.
The Hurricanes grabbed the first singles point of the day with Albuquerque’s defeat of Williford 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.
Stoica quickly cut the Hokie deficit to only one with her 6-0, 6-3 upset over #53 Wagner at No. 1 and gave the Hokies their only point of the day.
Riobueno, ranked #112, defeated Martinez-Marcos at No. 3 to give Miami the 3-1 advantage. The Hurricanes ultimately claimed the victory with Bolivar’s victory over Kahoun 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 5. The match was ended when the decision was made.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday, April 21 to take on Florida State at Noon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center for their final regular-season match of the season.
