No. 62 Hokies fall to Wake Forest

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 62 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons 3-4 Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Demon Deacons grabbed the doubles point to start the day. Xue Zhang and Karen Forman defeated Tea Ivanovic 8-4 at No. 2, and Brigita Bercyte and Andrea Retolaza defeated Carol Kahoun and Emily Lauten 8-6 at No. 3 to win the point.

Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford claimed a victory at No. 1 doubles as they led 7-6 over Kasey Gardiner and Kathryn Talbert when the doubles point was decided.

The Hokies quickly rebounded with two convincing wins. Ivanovic won 6-3, 6-0 over Bercyte at No. 6. That win was quickly followed by Mita’s 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 that gave Tech the 2-1 lead.

The Demon Deacons responded to even the score at 2 as Talbert defeated Stoica 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1.

Kahoun gave Tech its second lead of the day, 3-2, with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5.

No. 3 and 4 singles went to three sets each to round out the day. Zhang defeated Isel Martinez-Marcos 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 3 and Forman won the match for the Demon Deacons as she defeated Williford 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

The Hokies return to action next weekend as they travel to Clemson for a match on Saturday and Georgia Tech for a match on Sunday.
