BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 63 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated Maryland 5-2 Sunday, March 10 in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
The Hokies (10-2) swept the doubles matches to begin the day. At No. 1, Kelly Williford and Ilinca Stoica defeated Vroni Van Berlo and Sarah Gealer 8-2.
Tech clinched the point when Emily Lauten and Carol Kahoun won 8-5 over Gabriela Srodowski and Olga Gaistruck at No. 3 Raluca Mita and Tea Ivanovic claimed the No. 2 doubles match with an 8-4 victory over Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina.
Tech quickly clinched the match in singles play. Williford dominated at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Srodowski. Mita defeated O. Bredikhina 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
The Hokies clinched the match with Stoica’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Van Berlo at No. 1.
Maryland got on the board as Gaistruck defeated Tech’s Kahoun 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot. The Terps tallied their second point of the day with a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (8) win by N. Bredikhina over Ivanovic at No. 6.
Tech got back on track to finish the day with a 7-6, 6-3 win by Martinez-Marcos and bring the final score to 5-2.
The Hokies return to action Thursday, March 14 as they travel to Hammond, La. for a double-header.
