Hokies make debut in rankings

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The No. 68 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team is back in action this weekend. Tech will travel to Charleston, W.V. for an 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2 match against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Hokies will then take on the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m. in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Hokies made their debut in the rankings on Tuesday as the ITA released its latest rankings.

Tech currently sits at 6-2 and boasts a key win over then No. 41 Minnesota. Both of the Hokies’ losses have come to ranked opponents, as they have fallen to then No. 53 William & Mary and No. 49 VCU.

The last time the Hokies were in action was a loss to VCU in Richmond, Va. Tech fell 2-5 in their first road trip of the year and lost the doubles point for the first time this season.

Ilinca Stoica and Raluca Mita recorded wins at VCU to give Tech its two points for the day.

West Virginia currently has a 1-7 record. Last weekend, the Mountaineers fell to then No. 48 Penn State 2-5 in State College, Pa.

Richmond enters the Sunday’s match with a 3-7 record. The Spiders most recently fell to Maryland 1-6 in College Park.

The Hokies will return to action Saturday, March 9 to take on Marshall and Sunday, March 10 against Maryland.
