Hokies fall to No. 49 VCU

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to the No. 49 VCU Rams Tuesday afternoon.

The Hokies dropped the doubles point for the first time this season as the Rams swept doubles play.

Olga Barscheuskaya and Daria Yakauleva defeated Tech’s Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford 8-4 at No. 1. The Rams’ success continued as Josefin Hjertquist and Cindy Chala topped Carol Kahoun and Raluca Mita 8-2 at No. 2.

The No. 3 doubles match was ended after the doubles point was clinched. Emily Lauten and Isel Martinez-Marcos fell to Salome Kvitashvill and Olga Terteac 6-3.

No. 1 singles went to the Rams, as well, as Martinez-Marcos fell to Chala 6-2, 6-1. Terteac topped Williford 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

Tech scored their two points at No. 2 and 4 singles. At No. 2, Stoica defeated Hjertquist 6-0, 6-2 and at No. 4, Mita defeated Barscheuskaya 6-1, 6-4.

The Rams rounded out the day as Yukako Noi defeated Kahoun 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5. Tea Ivanovic went to a 10-point tiebreak to decided the match at No. 6 but fell to Karina Alesha 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (7).

The Hokies return to action as they travel to Morgantown to take on West Virginia on Saturday, March 2.
