BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will wrap up a seven-match home stretch this weekend as it hosts No. 53 William & Mary on Saturday at Noon, and later takes on both UMBC and Liberty on Sunday at 9:30 am and 5:00 pm, respectively. All matches will be played the Burrows Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
The Hokies enter the weekend at an impressive 4-0 on the year, including their most recent upset of No. 41 Minnesota last Sunday. Tech swept the competition last weekend, also knocking off Louisville to kick things off; a 5-2 score decided both matches.
Freshman Ilinca Stoica impressed as she earned her first win over a nationally-ranked opponent when she defeated the No. 84 player in the country at the No. 1 spot to kick off the weekend against Louisville. Newcomer Kelly Williford also eased to a pair of victories from the No. 4 spot, clinching the Louisville match for the Hokies. Freshman Raluca Mita bounced back from a singles loss against the Cardinals to clinch the match for Tech against the No. 41 Gophers from the No. 3 spot.
William & Mary enters the weekend as the No. 53 team in the country. The Tribe is 5-2 on the year and is coming off a win over UNC Wilmington to get it out to the program’s best start since 2007. William & Mary will look to Jeltje Loomans, who is 5-2 in duals, and Hope Johnson to pick up key victories in the Saturday afternoon match.
UMBC will arrive in Blacksburg with an 0-5 record this season. This is the Retrievers’ fifth consecutive match on the road this season. They are coming off a 6-1 loss to St. John’s, and also lost to William & Mary by the same score to begin the season.
Liberty enters the weekend with an 0-1 record in 2013, but will host Charlotte in its home opener on Saturday before making the short trip to Blacksburg so the Sunday evening match. The Lady Flames fell in their season opener to Appalachian State, 6-1.
