Williford dominant in USTA doubles action
Williford claimed mixed doubles title

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Freshman women’s tennis player Kelly Williford competed over in the USTA National Mixed Open Indoor during the holiday break and brought home a national title in the tournament along with her partner Nicolas Bradley.

The round of 32 tournament was held at Flushing Meddows Corona Park in Flushing, N.Y., which was also the host of both men’s and women’s open tournaments from Dec. 26-31.

Williford/ Bradley defeated the pair of Shelby Talcott, who plays at Iowa, and Aiden Talcott, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to seal the championship victory.

Williford also competed in the round of 16 women’s doubles tournament with Jocelyn Ffriend, making it all the way to the finals, but falling in the championship match to Julia Elbaba, of the University of Virginia, and Nicholle Stracar, from University of Miami, 6-0, 6-3.

The Hokies will begin their spring schedule on Sunday, Jan. 20 as they host Davidson at 10 a.m. and Navy at 3 p.m. at the Borrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
