Hokies Wrap Up Play at Kitty Harrison Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team competed at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. Sunday afternoon. Play began on Friday with doubles and two rounds of singles.

The Hokie team of Isel Martinez-Marcos/ Ilinca Stoica won their first two matches of the weekend before dropping the final (6-8) in the White draw to take second. The Hokies also took fifth in the White draw as Tea Ivanovic/ Carol Kahoun defeated Yurtkuran/ Grinberg of UNCG 8-5 to win the consolation bracket. Megan Conley/ Emily Lauten took fifth place in the Navy draw, also.

In singles action the Hokie effort was highlighted by the play of Kelly Williford. Williford won the Navy draw with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Dana Oppinger from Marshall in the final. In other Navy draw action, Emily Lauten took seventh by defeating teammate Tea Ivanovic, 6-2, 6-1.

Raluca Mita won the consolation bracket in the White draw to take fifth place. Isel Martinez-Marcos rounded out the Hokies in the top eight with her eighth-place finish in the Blue draw.

This weekend’s event marked the end of the fall season for Tech. The team will be back in action when the spring season commences on January 20 as Tech hosts Davidson and Navy in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
