BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team still have two players alive in the singles bracket and one doubles team competing as the field was narrowed to six teams after day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Raluca Mita highlighted the day for the Hokies as she knocked out a seeded and nationally ranked opponent in singles play and teamed up with Kelly Williford to defeat another seeded opponent in doubles action.
Of the seven top-eight players that entered the third day of play at the regional, only six still remain. The biggest upset of the day came from Tech’s Raluca Mita when she knocked off six seed Maria Fuccillo from Virginia. Fuccillo entered the regional ranked 99th nationally, but her run was ended when Mita claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory early in the day.
Mita later advanced to the quarterfinals when she defeated Howard’s Katelyn Stokes (6-3, 6-3), and will face three seed Stephanie Nauta from Virginia on Monday at 10:30 a.m.
Carol Kahoun was also in action early in the day, but fell to Marshall’s Dominikia Zapranza (6-1, 6-2). Zapranza was later defeated by eight seed Maci Epstein from Virginia (3-6, 6-2, 7-5).
Epstein will face top seeded Petra Januskova from Penn State in the quarterfinals after she cruised through the two rounds on Sunday.
In the bottom half of the singles bracket, the Hokies are represented by Isel Martinez-Marcos, who came from behind to beat Temple’s Jordan Batey (3-6, 6-0, 6-1) in the round of 32. In the last match of the day, Martinez-Marcos only needed two sets to defeat Marshall’s Maria Voscekova (6-3, 6-2) to advance to the quarterfinals.
Martinez-Marcos will face two seed Li Xi from Virginia Monday morning in the next round. Xi claimed victory over Georgetown’s Kelly Comilli (6-0, 6-2) in the first round of the day and advanced to Monday with a win over VCU’s Sali Kvitashvili (6-4, 6-0).
Joining the pair in the quarterfinals will be four seed Erin Vierra from Virginia and she will be forced to face her teammate Caryssa Peretz. Virginia leads all teams with five players in the quarterfinals.
The doubles team of Mita/ Williford defeated six seed Diana Ivanova/ Aleksandra Mitrovska from Old Dominion 8-2 to advance to Monday. They will again kick off the morning and face three seed Maria Belaya/ Jeltje Loomans from William & Mary. Belaya/ Loomans used an 8-1 win over the Marshall team of Karlyn Timko/ Dana Oppinger to move on.
Also in the quarterfinals is the eighth seed VCU team of Josefin Hjertuist/ Olga Barsheheuska after they topped Georgetown’s Kelly Comolli/ Victoria Sekely 8-6. The Rams will face the second seeded team of Stephanie Nauta/ Li Xi from Virginia after they defeated Marshall’s Kucin/ Ball 8-6.
Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday morning and doubles quarterfinals will start the day. Singles quarterfinals will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the semifinals for singles play will be played following the completion of the quarters.
