BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women's tennis team and 22 other represented teams wrapped up day one of the USTA/ ITA Atlantic Regional at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus today. The opening day of the regional saw the completion of the singles qualifiers and the first round of the main doubles draw (64).
In singles action, freshman Kelly Williford was the only Hokie in action. After an exhausting three-set win over Navy’s Gabby Winter (1-6, 7-6 [5], 6-0), she was defeated by West Virginia’s Vivian Tsui (6-4, 6-4) and was unable to advance to the main draw.
The Tech squad had a busy day in doubles action as it had four teams in action, but the team of Raluca Mita/ Kelly Williford had a bye today and will face Navy tomorrow.
Carol Kahoun/ Isel Martinez-Marcos defeated Aldunate/ Daniellson (8-5) to advance, and Tea Ivanovic/ Emily Lauten will also move on after defeating Davis/ Jadeja, 8-5, from St. Joseph’s.
The team of Frances Peyton/ Mashal Temory and Megan Conley/ Laura Ramthun ended their ITA run in the opening round of the doubles bracket.
Seven different teams were able to qualify for the main draw, which will begin on Saturday morning. Marshall was the only team to see more than one player qualify as Kai Broomfield topped Howard’s Umarah Mughnee (4-6, 6-0, 6-0) and Karlyn Timko defeated Pittsburgh’s Amanda Wickman (6-3, 6-0).
Also qualifying for the main draw was Georgetown’s Madeline Jaeger, who upset top-seeded Nina Vulovich (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) from William & Mary. Penn State’s Jacqueline Zuhse used a 7-5, 6-1 win over Navy’s Erin Snook to advance, and UMBC’s Shannon Cleary defeated Liberty’s Nicola Wellman in two sets (6-0, 6-2).
George Washington, Temple and West Virginia also added players to the main singles bracket as two of the three claimed two-set victories. GW’s Lana Robbins defeated fifth-seeded Sydney Smith from William & Mary (6-3, 6-0) and West Virginia’s Vivian Tsui knocked of Virginia Tech’s Kelly Williford (6-4, 6-4). Temple’s Jordan Batey qualified after long battle with St. Joseph’s Kristina Eisenbrand (6-7 (4), 6-2, 5-1 (ret.)).
There were 16 byes in the opening round of doubles play. Virginia Tech, Temple and Morgan State each used earned two doubles victories win the opening round, while Virginia, Virginia Tech and Marshall will all see three teams compete in the next round that continues Saturday.
