BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s Atlantic Regional Championships October 19-23. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this Regional will earn spots in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. This five-day event will be held at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus and admission is free. Live and final results throughout the Regional will be available at www.hokiesports.com/wtennis/brackets.

The tournament begins October 19 with two rounds of qualifying singles and a round of qualifying doubles. The main draw will get under way on Saturday, October 20. The event features players from 22 schools from across the region.

Virginia Tech will welcome players from Georgetown, George Washington, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Morgan State, Navy, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, Temple, University of Maryland-Baltimore County, Virginia, West Virginia and William & Mary.

The Hokies will open play seeing Kelly Williford competing as the eight seed in qualifying singles, while doubles teams of Carol Kahoun/ Isel Martinez-Marcos, Tea Ivanovic/ Emily Lauten, Frances Peyton/ Marshal Tamory, Raluca Mita/ Williford, and Megan Conley/ Laura Ramthun will all compete on Friday.

Twelve USTA/ITA Regionals are being held this weekend across the nation at various campuses. The Regionals funnel players to the USTA/ITA National Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

As the governing body of collegiate tennis, the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievement of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Skillman, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships. The ITA also has a comprehensive awards program for players and coaches to honor excellence in academics, leadership and sportsmanship. The official ITA website is www.itatennis.com.
