Hokies edge Deacs, 4-3
Women's tennis sweeps doubles and wins three singles matches
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 63 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated Wake Forest, 4-3 on Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C. With the win the Hokies improve to 12-7 and 3-3 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons fall to 3-12 and 0-6 in the league.
Tech swept all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead in the match. Isel Martinez-Marcos and Emily Lauten teamed up to defeat Wake’s Brigita Bercyte and Catherine Roach, 8-1.
Martha Blakely and Carol Kahoun secured the doubles point for the Hokies, teaming up in the No. 1 doubles to defeat the Wake duo of Kayla Duncan and Rebecca Siegler, 8-4. Shannon Betts and Courtney Rauscher also picked up a win in doubles with a 9-8(3) decision in the No. 2 match against Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman.
Lauten picked up a win in the No. 6 singles to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead in the match. She defeated Roach in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-2. The Deacs got on the board first to cut the Tech lead down to 2-1 with a win in the No. 1 singles as No. 63 ranked Duncan defeated Blakely, 6-1, 6-1.
In the No. 4 singles, Rauscher secured a 6-0, 6-1 win against Forman to give Tech a 3-1 lead in the match. Kahoun claimed the win in the deciding match for the Hokies with a victory in the No. 5 singles, defeating Bercyte, 6-1, 6-2.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday in a 1 p.m. match at NC State.
