BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 59 ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will host a pair of top-12 teams over the weekend as ACC foes No. 5 Duke and No. 11 North Carolina enter Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies will face the Tar Heels at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23 and Duke on Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. Both matches are slated for Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech (11-5, 2-1 ACC) is coming off a mid-week win against William & Mary. The Hokies defeated the Tribe, 6-1. Virginia Tech won two of three singles matches to claim the point and followed that up with five wins in singles. Isel Martinez-Marcos, Shannon Betts, Courtney Rauscher, Carol Kahoun and Emily Lauten notched wins.
Betts and Kahoun have both had 11 wins in duals this season to lead the team and have records of 11-4 and 11-5, respectively. Lauten has tallied a 10-6 record while Martha Blakely is 9-6 on the season. Martinez-Marcos is 8-7 and Rauscher is 7-5.
North Carolina (12-4, 2-0 ACC) defeated NC State, 6-1 the last time out. The Tar Heels swept the doubles matches and won five singles matches.
UNC has four players ranked in the latest ITA singles standings with Lauren McHale lead the way at No. 26. Zoe DeBrycker (No. 33), Caroline Price (No. 96) and Shinann Featherstone (No. 118) join McHale in the rankings. In doubles, the Tar Heels’ Featherstone and McHale are No. 13 while Tessa Lyons and Haley Hemm are No. 53.
Duke (13-2, 2-0 ACC) shutout Wake Forest, 7-0 in its last match. The Blue Devils swept all singles and doubles matches in the win.
Beatrice Capra leads the Blue Devils with a No. 2 ranking in the ITA standings. Duke has five additional players ranked with Hanna Mar (No. 48), Monica Turewicz (No. 68), Mary Clayton (No. 71), Rachel Kahan (No. 102) and Ester Goldfeld (No. 117). In doubles Clayton and Goldfeld are No. 31.
The Hokies will be back on the road following the weekend matches. Tech will travel to Wake Forest on Saturday March 31 and play at NC State on Sunday, April 1.
