Blakely named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior Martha Blakely and Duke freshman Beatrice Capra have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Players of the Week.

Blakely won 24 of 27 games while sweeping two matches at No. 1 singles in two Hokie victories, while Capra scored wins over 12th-ranked opponents in singles and doubles while leading the Blue Devils to the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Blakely swept Stephani Synn of Davidson by a 6-0 and 6-0 score, then downed Marine Wielczko of East Tennessee State 6-2, 6-1 in a victory that clinched a 5-2 match win for the Hokies. Blakely, a native of Reading, Pa., also went unbeaten at No. 1 doubles, teaming with Carol Kahoun for the win against Davidson and with Courtney Rauscher for the victory against ETSU.

Capra scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mississippi’s 12th-ranked Kristi Boxx to clinch a 4-3 Duke win over the Rebels in the first round of the ITA Indoors. The Ellicott Ciy, Md., native also teamed with Rachel Kahan to sweep four doubles matches in the tournament as the third-ranked Blue Devils defeated No. 10 Michigan and No. 7 California before falling to No. 4 UCLA in the finals. Capra and Kahan teamed up for an 8-2 upset of UCLA’s 12th-ranked Robin Anderson and Skylar Morton in the championship match.
