Women's tennis hosts a pair of weekend matches
Tech will host Winthrop on Saturday and Appalachian State on Sunday

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 61 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team is set to host a pair of matches over the weekend beginning with Winthrop on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m. On Sunday, Feb. 5, the Hokies will welcome Appalachian State for noon match at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

Tech (2-1) started the season with a pair of wins, but fell to No. 9 Virginia the last time out. Martha Blakely and Shannon Betts have posted a 2-1 record for the Hokies this season in the No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Newcomer Carol Kahoun is 2-1 in singles having played in both the No. 3 and No. 4 while Emily Lauten is 2-1 in the No. 4 and No. 5. Katie Blow has a 1-1 mark in the No. 6.

Winthrop (3-4) is coming off a 4-2 loss to College of Charleston. Leading the Eagles is Yasmine Alkema who was recently named the Big South Player of the Week after picking up a win in the No. 1 singles against No. 14 Clemson. Alkema has a 4-2 record on the season. Andressa Garcia is adding a 3-4 mark in the No. 2.

The Mountaineers (2-1) fell to James Madison, 5-2 the last time out. Leading ASU are Ellie Linsell and Jennifer Ansari with 3-0 records in the No. 1 and 2 singles. Kim-Lea Dinh has a 2-1 mark in the No. 6.

Following the weekend matches, the Hokies will remain at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis center, hosting Davidson and East Tennessee State in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 11.
