Women's tennis signs three for 2012-13
The Hokies will add a trio of standout athletes

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech head women’s tennis coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods announced the signing of three players to national letters of intent for the 2012-13 academic year. Raluca Mita, Ilinca Stoica and Kelly Williford will join the Hokies.

“We are thrilled with the newest additions to our team for the fall of 2012,” said Zawacki-Woods. “All three signees have strong work ethics, terrific attitudes and a passion for tennis that we were looking for during the recruiting process. I believe each one has the ability to make a positive impact throughout their years at Virginia Tech and I am excited to help them continue to succeed both on and off the court.”

Mita comes to Virginia Tech from Bacau, Romania where she was ranked as high as fifth in the Romanian junior standings and as high as 37 in the senior rankings. Mita was a finalist in the 2011 National Championship Seniors Doubles tournament and placed third in the National Championships in 2009. Having competed in several international tournaments, Mita has secured wins over players ranked in the top-200 in the ITF world rankings.

Stoica has achieved a high ranking of 74 in the ITF junior world standings. On the WTA tour, she was ranked 861 in singles and 802 in doubles. The Piatra Neamt, Romania native claimed titles in both singles and doubles at the 34th Sibiu-Sen Junior International Tournament, the singles title at the Kenana Cup and won the seventh SFAX ITF junior championships. In addition, she has competed in Junior Wimbledon, where she lost in the second round of the main draw, and in the U.S. Open and the French Open.

Williford has been ranked as high as 97th nationally in the tennis rankings by tennisrecruiting.net which tabbed her a four-star recruit. The Basking Ridge, N.J. native was ranked fourth in her state and was a quarterfinalist in the New Jersey High School State Tournament. In 2011, Williford won the Lawrence A. Miller Girls 16 Sportsmanship Award for the Eastern Tennis Association.
