Tech moves on to flight finals of Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech women’s tennis notched semifinal wins to advance to the finals in both doubles and the flight C singles during the second day of the Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va. The final rounds will begin on Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Hokies advanced to the finals in both the A and B doubles. In the A flight, Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher advanced while Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos moved on in the B flight.

Blakely and Rauscher defeated Tulane’s duo of Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton, 8-4. The Hokie pair will face Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy of Tulane in Sunday’s finals.

Ivanovic and Martinez-Marcos paired up for an 8-2 win over Emily Dvorak and Emma Helisten of Tulane. Tech’s duo is set to play another pairing from Tulane, facing Lindsay Dvorak and Hila Elster on Sunday in the finals.

In singles, Ivanovic advanced to the C flight finals with a pair of wins on Saturday. In the first match she defeated Elon’s Barbara Lazarova 7-5, 6-2. Later, in the semifinals, Ivanovic shutout Liberty’s Nicola Wellman with straight set scores of 6-0, 6-0. Ivanovic advances to Sunday’s finals and will face Tulane’s Lindsay Dvorak.

Martinez-Marcos picked up a win in the second round of the A flight, defeating UMBC’s Kim Berghaus in a tough three set match. After securing the opening set, 6-4, Martinez-Marcos fell behind in the second set, falling 6-3. She rallied for a 6-3 win in the third. In the A flight semifinals, Tulane’s Kurdadze defeated Martinez-Marcos, 6-4, 6-3. Martinez-Marcos will compete against William & Mary’s Katie Kargl in the third place match.

Blakely played a pair of tough matches on Saturday in the A flight. In the first match, she faced W&M’s Kargl, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. In the consolation draw, Blakely secured a win over UMBC’s Shalini Sahoo with scores of 4-6, 7-5, 1-0(5).

Tech’s Katie Blow picked up a 7-6(2), 6-2 decision over Briana Berne of Elon in her first match of the day in the D flight. In the semifinals, Blow fell to Tulane’s Emma Helisten, 6-1, 7-6(5).

Also in the D flight, the Hokies’ Emily Lauten dropped her opening match of the day, falling to Jessica Brumit of ETSU, 7-5, 6-3. Lauten rallied in the consolation bracket for a 6-4, 6-1 win over Liberty’s Annisha Domenech.

Sunday’s final rounds will begin at 9 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
