Hokies advance on opening day of Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech women’s tennis claimed four wins in both singles and doubles to go undefeated on the opening day of the 18th Annual Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies got started with doubles wins in the morning. In the A flight, Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher paired up for a bye in the opening round before sweeping Wofford’s pair, Othilia Lindqvist and Julia Paulson, 8-0 in the second round.

In the flight B doubles, Katie Blow and Emily Lauten teamed up for a pair of wins, starting with an opening round 8-4 win over UMBC’s Isabel Aldunate and Heidi Danielsson. The Hokie pair secured a win in the second round, defeating East Tennessee State’s Jessica Brumit and Elon’s Kaylyn Smialek, 8-1.

Tech’s Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos also competed in the B flight doubles. The duo had a first round bye, but notched an 8-5 decision over Radford’s Hannah Crawford and Meg Napolitano.

All of the Hokies’ doubles teams advance to Saturday’s semifinal rounds.

Tech’s Blakely defeated Sarah Evans of Wofford, 7-6(6), 6-2 in the opening round of the A flight singles. In the next round, Blakely will play Katie Kargl of William & Mary. Martinez-Marcos had an opening round bye in the flight A singles. She is set to face UMBC’s Kim Berghaus in the second round.

In the B flight singles, Rauscher had a bye in the opening round. Rauscher will play Caroline Magnusson of Tulane in the second round on Saturday.

The Hokies’ Ivanovic claimed a win in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Radford’s Taylor Newman in the C flight singles. Ivanovic will play Barbara Lazarova of Elon in the second round.

Rounding out singles competition for the Hokies were Blow and Lauten in the D flight. Blow defeated Liberty’s Jessie Boda, 6-2, 6-1 and will face Elon’s Briana Berne on Saturday in the second round. Lauten claimed a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Katy Canada of Elon. The Tech player will square off against Tulane’s Emily Dvorak in the next round.
