NORFOLK, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team claimed wins on Friday during the opening day of the USTA/ITA Women’s Atlantic Regional in Norfolk, Va.
In the qualifying singles, Emily Lauten secured a win in the opening round, defeating Liberty’s Alexandra Sheeran in a three set match. Sheeran took an early match lead with a 6-4 win in the first set, but Lauten came back to claim the next two with scores of 6-4, 6-3. In the second round Lauten fell to UMBC’s Carman Jackman, 7-5, 6-3.
The Hokies picked up a win in doubles as Tea Ivanovic and Isel Martinez-Marcos defeated Temple’s Alicia Dome and Yana Mavrina, 8-5. The pair will face Georgetown’s Vicky Sekeley and Tina Tehrani in the next round.
Tech’s Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher received a bye in the first round and will play Helen Cunningham and Alex Smyth of Richmond on Saturday.
Qualifying singles will wrap up on Saturday and the main draw is set to begin. Doubles will continue on Saturday.
