MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Virginia Tech women’s tennis had a strong opening day at the Martha Thorn Invitational with all four Hokies advancing to the semifinals of their singles' flights on Friday in Morgantown, W.Va.
In the flight A singles, Tea Ivanovic picked up a pair of wins, defeating Youngstown State’s Carolyn Jesko, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round. The Tech sophomore followed that up with a win over Jocelyn Lu of Pitt with scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Isel Martinez-Marcos also claimed a pair of wins in the A flight. She dropped Tiffany Dittmer of Ohio State, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. In the second round Martinez-Marcos had a hard fought three set match against host team WVU’s Ikttesh Chahal, but came out on top with scores of 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.

In the flight B singles, Emily Lauten defeated Cleveland State’s Nicole Janek in a back and forth three set match. Lauten claimed the opening set 7-5, but fell in the second 6-1 before rallying for a 6-3 win in the third set. In the second round Lauten, downed Tara Majdalani of Duquesne, 6-0, 6-1.
Katie Blow picked up a win over Pitt’s Taylor Washington in the first round with straight set scores of 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, Blow defeated Duquesne’s Chandler Consonary, 6-0, 6-1.
In the semifinals, Lauten will face Pitt’s Molly Wickman and Blow will play Veronica Cardenas of WVU.
Competition will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m.
