Hokies to compete at two events

Wake Forest Invitational Draws

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Three members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will compete over the weekend, as they split up for the Wake Forest Invitational, Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and the Williamsburg ITF Circuit, Oct. 2-4.

Shannon Betts and Courtney Rauscher will make the trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the Wake Forest Invitational as the Demon Deacons open the new Wake Forest Tennis Complex. In addition to Tech and the host team, competing over the weekend will be athletes from Virginia, Marshall, West Virginia, VCU, Missouri, Louisville, Richmond, Campbell, Radford, East Tennessee State, Davidson, UNC Greensboro and Elon. Four of the teams in the field were ranked in the final ITA poll last season.

The tournament will consist of six singles flights and three doubles flights. Betts is competing in the A singles while Rauscher is in the C singles. The Tech pair will participate in the B doubles. Play will begin on Friday, Sept. 30 at 9 a.m.

Playing in Williamsburg is Martha Blakely. The field includes several ranked players from around the world. Blakely will compete in the singles qualifying draw of 64, held Oct. 2-3.
