Hokies have solid opening day at Tribe Invitational
VT women's tennis advances in singles' flights

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech had a solid opening day at the 19th Annual Tribe Invitational as the Hokies advanced in singles. The three-day event is being hosted by William & Mary.

In the Singles Flight A, Martha Blakely defeated Tulane’s Caroline Thornton in a tough three set match. Blakely took the first set, 7-6(3), but Thornton came back to claim the second, 4-6. In the final set, Blakely won 1-0(4) to take the match.

Tea Ivanovic downed Ekin Gunaysu of Winthrop in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

Tech’s Isel Martinez-Marcos fell to host team Willam & Mary’s Anik Cepeda in three sets with scores of 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(6).

VT will continue play on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. with doubles. Singles action is set to start at 11 a.m.
