BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will send four women’s tennis players to the 19th Annual Tribe Invitational, hosted by William & Mary, Sept. 9-11 in Williamsburg, Va.
Also competing with the Hokies and the Tribe over the weekend will be Tulane, Old Dominion, James Madison, Winthrop, VCU, Columbia, Penn and Richmond. Last season, the Hokies (No. 58), William & Mary (No. 44), Winthrop (No. 64) and VCU (No. 37) were are all ranked in the final ITA standings of the spring.
In action for the Hokies will be Martha Blakely (Sr., Reading, Pa.), Tea Ivanovic (So., Antwerpen, Belgium), Isel Martinez-Marcos (So., Esparreguera, Spain) and Emily Lauten (Jr., Marietta, Ga.).
Blakely and Ivanovic are both seeded in the A Flight singles. Blakely will square off against Tulane’s Caroline Thornton while Ivanovic will face Ekin Gunaysu from Winthrop in the opening rounds.
In the opening round of the Flight B singles, Martinez-Marcos is set to play unattached player, Anik Cepeda.
Lauten rounds out the singles for the Hokies in the C Flight against Penn’s Lauren Bridges.
VT’s Blakely and Ivanovic are set to pair up in the Flight A Doubles and will pick up play in the second round.
In the Flight B Doubles, Lauten and Martinez-Marcos will face VCU’s duo of Ana Bara and Daria Yakavlev.
The three-day event will consist of five singles flights and two doubles flights. Friday will consist of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles with doubles play getting underway at 9 a.m. On Saturday one round of doubles and two rounds of singles of singles will be played. The championship and consolation matches of both singles and doubles will be played on Sunday.
The event is scheduled to be played at the Millie West Tennis Facility (both doubles flights and Flights A, B and C for singles) and the Rec Courts (singles Flights D and E), weather permitting. If it rains, play could be forced indoors to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The timing of all matches will change if this occurs due to the decrease in the number of courts from 12 (outdoors) to six (indoors).
