BLACKSBURG, Va. - Martha Blakely, a junior women’s tennis player from Reading, Pa., has been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American District III At-large University Division team. Blakely was a first-team selection, which was determined by voting members of CoSIDA, the College Sports Information Directors of America. Blakely, who received the same honor last season and was named to the third team nationally, is now eligible for the national team which will be announced later this month.
To qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be of at least sophomore standing, have been enrolled at their current school for at least one year, have a minimum of 3.3 grade point average, and be a starter or significant reserve on their team. District III is comprised of schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
“I am very proud of Martha’s academic achievements and being selected for this honor,” said Virginia Tech head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “I am excited for her to be recognized and rewarded for her efforts. Martha displays the same work ethic in the classroom as she does on the court.”
Blakely, who led the team with 22 singles victories, is majoring in biochemistry, chemistry and mathematics and received the 2010 Skelton Award, given to the top Virginia Tech female scholar-athlete. She has been selected to both the Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, and was a two-time member of both the All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis team as well as the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
