Hamza receives Atlantic Region Arthur Ashe Award
Tech senior honored for leadership and sportsmanship

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech senior Yasmin Hamza has been named as the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recipient for the Atlantic Region. Hamza is among 12 regional winners of the honor with the national winner to be announced at a later date. Tech’s Kristen Stubbs won the national Arthur Ashe Award in 2003.

The ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding individuals in all divisions at the regional and national level. In August the national winners are honored during a special ceremony hosted by the USTA during Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day inside Ashe Stadium. This award which dates back to 1982, goes to NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JuCo men’s and women’s players who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.

Hamza (Cairo, Egypt), An All-ACC selection and No. 94 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, played at the top of the lineup for the 58th-ranked Hokies for most of the dual match season. She won 21 singles matches this year, including an upset of then No. 15 Zoe De Bruycker (North Carolina). Hamza is ranked No. 50 in doubles with Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.).
