#13 Clemson defeats #54 Tech, 4-1

CARY, N.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team was eliminated in the opening round of the ACC Championship Thursday afternoon, falling 4-1, to #13 Clemson. The men’s and women’s event is being played at the Cary Tennis Center. The win lifts the Tigers to 19-9 on the year, while the Hokies fall to 10-15.

Clemson, the No. 6 seed, won the two completed doubles matches for the first point of the day, then won three of the four completed singles contest to clinch the victory. The remaining singles matches were halted once the team outcome had been determined.

After taking the doubles point, Clemson took a 2-0 advantage as Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) lost, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 against 45th-ranked Keri Wong. Tech got on the scoreboard as Isel Martinez-Marcos ( Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) defeated Laurianne Henry, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6. The Tigers increased the lead to 3-1 when Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) fell, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3 versus No. 116 Nelly Ciolkowski. Clemson cliched the win at No. 1 as Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) lost, 6-2, 7-5, to 10th-ranked Josipa Bek.

Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) led Maria Belaya, 2-6, 6-2, 4-2, in the No. 4 match and Clemson’s Caroline Magnusson led Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla), 6-4, 3-2, when both matches were halted.

Clemson took the doubles point as No. 52 Hamza/Johnson lost, 8-2, at No. 1 to fifth-ranked Bek Wong and Betts/Blakely fell, 8-2, at No. 2 against Magnusson Vyskocilova. The No. 3 match of Martinez-Marcos/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) vs. Ciolkowski/Henry was halted at 6-6 once the doubles point had been decided.
