Tech senior named to elite team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech senior Yasmin Hamza has been selected as a member of the 2011 All-ACC Women’s Tennis Team as announced by the conference office Thursday morning. Hamza and her Tech teammates will face No. 12 Clemson Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m., in the first round of the ACC Men’s and Women’s Championships beginning held at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Hamza (Cairo, Egypt), No. 89 nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, has played at the top of the lineup for the 54th-ranked Hokies for most of the dual match season. She has won 21 singles matches this year, including an upset of then No. 15 Zoe De Bruycker (North Carolina). Hamza is ranked No. 52 in doubles with Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.).

Miami senior Bianca Eichkorn was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year and leads the 2011 All-ACC Team.

Rachel Kahan of Duke was named as the ACC Freshman of the Year, and North Carolina’s Brian Kalbas received Coach of the Year honors for the second straight season. Individual honors, as well as the 19-member All-ACC team, were determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches.
