#12 Tigers sweep #52 Hokies in final regular season match
Senior duo Hamza/Johnson wins No. 1 doubles match

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team played its final match of the regular season this afternoon, falling 7-0 to the #12 Tigers of Clemson University. #45 Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson, Tech’s two seniors, won their doubles match, 8-7(6), for the only Tech victory of the day. The win lifts the Tigers to 18-7 (6-5 ACC) while the Hokies finish 10-14 (2-9 ACC).

Caroline Magnusson and Klara Vyskocilova got the day started for the Tigers with an 8-3 victory over Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) and Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) in the No. 2 doubles. Nelly Ciolkowski and Laurianne Henry then clinched the opening point with a close 8-6 win over Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) and Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) in No. 3 doubles. #45 Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) and Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.), Tech’s two seniors, then pulled out an 8-7(6) victory in their final collegiate regular season match, defeating Maria Belaya and Keri Wong in the No. 1 spot.

#119 Vyskocilova was the first to finish her singles match as well, defeating Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.), 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 3 match. Belaya made it 3-0 Tigers with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Rauscher in No. 6 singles, and Magnusson then clinched the victory for the Tigers, downing Johnson 6-2, 6-4 in No. 4 singles. Henry continued the Tigers’ win streak with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Martinez-Marcos at No. 5 singles. Ciolkowski earned a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(6) victory over Blakely in the No. 2 spot, and #50 Keri Wong then completed the Tigers’ sweep, earning a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over #78 Yasmin Hamza in the No. 1 spot.

The Hokies have now completed the regular season and will head to Cary, N.C., next weekend for the 2011 ACC Championships.
