Hokies conclude regular season at Georgia Tech, Clemson
Tech faces two top-20 programs

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will close out the regular season this weekend with matches at No. 13 Georgia Tech and at No. 12 Clemson. The match versus the Yellow Jackets will be played Saturday at noon, and the contest against the Tigers is scheduled for Sunday at noon.

Tech (10-12, 2-7), ranked No. 52 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, split two home matches last week defeating No. 56 Wake Forest, 4-3, and dropping a 6-1 decision against No. 30 NC State. The Hokies will be led once again by Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) at No. 1 and Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) at No. 2. Hamza, ranked No. 78 nationally, is 14-8 in dual matches this season, while Blakely is 22-14 in singles contests. Hamza/Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) are ranked No. 45 nationally in doubles.

Georgia Tech (11-8, 4-5) dropped two matches last week by 5-2 scores at No. 3 North Carolina and at No. 4 Duke. The Yellow Jackets’ Jillian O’Neil is No. 39 in singles and is joined in the national rankings by No. 94 Caroline Lilley. The doubles team of Sasha Krupina/Lilley is ranked No. 55 in the nation. Georgia Tech leads the series, 9-2, and has won all six ACC meetings.

Clemson (17-8, 5-4) also lost two matches last weekend falling, 6-1, to the Blue Devils and, 4-3, against the Tar Heels. The Tigers’ lineup includes No. 9 Josipa Bek, No. 50 Keri Wong and No. 119 Klara Vyskocilova with Bek/Wong ranked No. 3 in doubles. Clemson leads the series, 11-4, and won, 6-1, last year in Blacksburg, Va.

Following this weekend’s matches, the Hokies will participate in the ACC Women’s Tennis Championships, Apr. 21-24, in Cary, N.C.
