BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 56 Virginia Tech defeated No. 52 Wake Forest Friday in a back-and-forth affair, only decided in the second-to-last match of the day.
The Hokies improve to 10-11 on the season, 2-6 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons slide to 6-12 and remain winless in conference play at 0-8.
Wake Forest captured the first point of the day in the doubles competition. Emilee Malvehy and Martina Pavalec defeated Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher, 8-2, in the No. 2 match and the Demon Deacons clinched the point as Ryann Cutillo and Anna Mydlowska edged out Shannon Betts and Katie Blow in a close 8-6 contest. Tech rebounded in the No. 1 match however, as the No. 76 pair of Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson upset No. 14 Kathryn Talbert and Kayla Duncan, 8-5, to close out doubles competitoin.
Blakely evened things up for the Hokies in the first singles match of the day, as she defeated Talbert, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot. The Hokies earned another point in the No. 6 match, as Isel Martinez-Marcos went three sets against Mydlowska, coming out victorious 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, but Wake Forest tied things up in the No. 4 match, as Duncan bested Betts, 6-7, 3-5. Halfway through singles competition, the score was knotted up at 2-2.
In the No. 5 match, Johnson defeated Cutillo, 6-3, 7-3, to give Tech a 3-2 lead. The Hokies secured the victory with the No. 1 match, as Hamza stretched into a three-set victory over Pavelec, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. The final match of the day was decided in the third set as well, with Malvehy edging out Tea Ivanovic, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Next, the Hokies host the final home competition this season as they take on No. 30 NC State Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. It is also senior day, as Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson will be competing in the final home competition of their Hokie careers.
