Tech plays final home matches against Wake Forest, NC State
Hamza, Johnson to honored Sunday on senior day

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will close out its home schedule this weekend with matches against No. 52 Wake Forest and No. 30 NC State. The match versus the Demon Deacons will be played Friday at 2 p.m., and the contest against the Wolfpack is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. Tech seniors Yasmin Hamza and Holly Johnson will be honored prior to Sunday’s match which will also be USTA Kids Day with snacks and drinks provided for all kids in attendance. HokieBird will also be in attendance and there will be a clinic held after the match.

Tech (9-11, 1-6), ranked No. 56 in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, will be led once again by Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) at No. 1 and Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) at No. 2. Hamza is 13-7 in dual matches this season, including last week’s upset of North Carolina’s 15th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker. Blakely is 21-13 in singles contests. The Hokies dropped two away matches last weekend at No. 4 Duke and No. 3 UNC.

Wake Forest (6-11, 0-7) dropped two matches last week by 6-1 scores at No. 5 Miami and No. 34 Florida State. The Demon Deacons Martina Pavelec is No. 24 in singles and the doubles team of Kayla Duncan/Kathryn Talbert is ranked No. 15 in the nation. Wake Forest leads the series, 21-4, and took a tight, 4-3, win last year in Winston-Salem, N.C. However, Tech won the last meeting in Blacksburg, Va., 5-2, during the 2009 season.

NC State (11-6, 2-5) split two matches last weekend in the Sunshine State defeating the 34th-ranked Seminoles, 4-3, before dropping a 5-2 match against the fifth-ranked Hurricanes. The Wolfpack lineup includes No. 29 Sanaa Bhambri and No. 83 Sandhya Nagaraj and the pair are ranked No. 26 in doubles. NC State leads the series, 16-3, but Tech won, 7-0, two years ago in Blacksburg.

Following this weekend’s matches, the Hokies will conclude the regular season schedule with contests at No. 12 Georgia Tech (Fri., Apr. 15) and at No. 11 Clemson (Sun., Apr. 17).
