CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – For the second consecutive day, the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to a top-5 opponent dropping a 6-1 match against No. 3 North Carolina at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the University of North Carolina campus. The Tar Heels improved to 18-3 on the year and 7-0 in the ACC, while Tech fell to 9-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference.

The bright spot of the match for Tech occurred in the No. 1 singles match as Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) upset 15th-ranked Zoe De Bruycker, 7-5, 6-4. In other singles results, Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) fell, 6-3, 6-2, to No. 81 Shinann Featherston (UNC) at No. 2 and Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) lost, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 3 contest versus Jelena Durisic.

Elsewhere in singles, Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 to Gina Suarez-Malaguti, Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) fell, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (0), at No. 5 against 125th-ranked Lauren McHale and Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) dropped the No. 6 contest, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6), to Teresa Lyons.

In doubles, Tech won the No. 3 match as Betts/Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.) defeated De Bruycker/Suarez-Martin, 8-6. However, the Tar Heels came back to claim the first point of the match as Hamza/Johnson, ranked No. 76, lost the No. 1 match, 9-7, to sixth-ranked Featherston/McHale and Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) fell, 9-7, at No. 2 versus Jelena Durisic/Jennifer Stone.

The Hokies will return to action next weekend for home matches against Wake Forest (Sat., 2 p.m.) and NC State (Sun., 1 p.m.).
