DURHAM, N.C. – The fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils proved to be too strong Saturday afternoon as they defeated Virginia Tech, 7-0, at the Sheffeld Indoor Tennis Center on the Duke University campus. The Blue Devils improved to 16-2 on the year and 5-0 in the ACC, while Tech fell to 9-10 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
After winning all three doubles matches to capture the first point of the dual match, the Blue Devils swept all of the six singles matches to seal the victory.
In singles, Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) dropped the No. 1 match, 7-6, 6-4, to 45th-ranked Nadine Fahoum, Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) fell, 6-2, 6-4, to No. 77 Ellah Nze at No. 2 and Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-2, 6-4, in the No. 3 contest versus No. 13 Reka Zsilinsz.
Elsewhere in singles, Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) lost, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 to No. 59 Elizabeth Platkin, Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) fell, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 against 72nd-ranked Rachel Kahan and Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) dropped the No. 6 contest, 6-4, 6-0, to No. 64 Mary Clayton.
In doubles, Hamza/Johnson, ranked No. 76, lost the No. 1 match, 9-8, to 71st-ranked Kahan/Nze and Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) fell, 9-7, at No. 2 versus Fahoum/Hanna Mar. Duke completed the sweep at No. 3 as Betts/Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.) lost, 8-2, against No. 72 Clayton/Monica Gorny.
The Hokies will return to action on Sunday with a 1p.m., match at No. 3 North Carolina
