BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team suffered a tough, 6-1, loss to Miami in Sunday’s match at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokies started strong, putting the first point on the board after winning two of the three doubles matches, but Miami swept singles play to seal the victory. The singles play started off in favor of the Hurricanes (12-4, 4-1 ACC) at the No. 2 spot as No. 39 Anna Bartenstein topped Tech's (9-9, 1-4 ACC) Martha Blakely(Jr., Reading, Pa.) in two sets, 6-2, 6-0. In the following match, Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) was defeated by Miami’s Brittany Dubins, 6-0, 6-3.
At the No. 1 spot, Yazmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) was defeated by No. 6 Bianca Eichkorn, 6-2, 6-4, and Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwer, Belgium) dropped a three-set match to No. 85 Kayla Rizzolo, as Rizzolo took the third seed, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Miami’s streak continued as Melissa Bolivar took the No. 5 spot from Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) in a 6-2, 7-6 defeat. The final singles match saw Miami’s Gabriela Mejia top Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) in two sets, 7-6, 6-4.
Tech held firm during doubles play, as No. 2 Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (Jr., Evans, Ga.) took the first match, defeating Miami’s Bolivar/Mejia, 8-3. The Hokies continued strong, winning the second match and the No. 3 seed as Betts/Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.) defeated Dubins/Danielle Mills, 8-4, but the No. 1 pair of Hamza/Johnson dropped the final doubles match to Bartenstein/Eichkorn, 8-5.
The Hokies head back to the court next Saturday, April 2, at Noon to face Duke in Durham, N.C.
