No. 57 Tech falls to No. 35 Florida State, 5-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 57 Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to No. 35 Florida State, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Tech got out to a promising start, sweeping doubles play and capturing the top singles spot, but the Seminoles took over from there.

To begin singles play, Tech (9-8, 1-3 ACC) picked up its first and only win as No. 1 Yazmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo Egypt) defeated Florida State’s Francesca Segarelli, 6-1,6-4. Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) dropped the No. 4 match, 2-6, 2-6, against Ruth Seaborne, and Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwer, Belgium) was defeated by No. 66 Noemie Scharle 3-6, 3-6.

To keep things rolling for the Seminoles (7-5, 2-2 ACC), No. 46 Katie Rybakova took the No. 2 spot from Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), winning in three sets 0-6, 7-6, 6-1, and Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) was defeated by Amy Sargeant in the No. 6 spot, 2-6, 6-2, 5-7.

In the final singles event, Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) dropped the No. 5 game to FSU’s Federica Suess, 7-5, 5-7, 3-6.

Tech made up some ground in doubles action, as No. 2 Blakely/ Courtney Rauscher (Jr., Evans, Ga.) took the first match with an 8-5 win over Florida State’s Sargeant/Segarelli. At the No. 3 spot Betts/Blow took the next match with an 8-4 victory over Florida State’s Seaborne/Rybakova. The No. 1 pair of Hazma/Johnson won the final doubles match with an 8-7 win over Scharle/Suess .

The Hokies will return to action Sunday, March 27 as they host No. 6 Miami. The match is set to begin at Noon.
