BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team topped East Tennessee State 7-0 in the second of two matches this weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Despite dropping one doubles match, the Hokies otherwise swept their competition on Sunday afternoon.

After winning the doubles point to open the match, Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) started singles play off on a positive note with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Karina Kedzo at No. 4 for Tech’s first singles point of the day. Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) tacked on another point for the Hokies when she took the No. 1 contest, 6-4, 6-2, over Paula Jaime.

Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) won her No. 5 match versus Diana Navrotska in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, clinching the team victory.

No. 120 Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) dominated play at No. 2 and added to Tech’s lead as she earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Kelly Holtzhausen.

Two close matches for Tech would wrap up the afternoon; beginning with Tea Ivanovic’s (Fr., Antwerp, Belgium) performance in the No. 3 spot. She took the first set 6-3 from Marine Weiliczko, but then fell in the second, 3-6. In the third set, she eventually defeated her opponent 10-7 in the super tiebreaker to claim the win.

After falling behind early, Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) responded and captured a, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, win over Andra Voinea at No. 6 to round out singles play.

In doubles action, Betts/Martinez-Marcos picked up Tech’s first win of the day, as they topped Navrotska/Voinea, 8-3, in the No. 3 match. Next came a victory for Blakely/ Courtney Rasuscher (Jr., Evans, Ga.) at No. 2 when they defeated Holtzhausen/Weiliczko, 8-5.

Tech’s only loss of the day was at No. 1 as Hamza/Johnson lost, 8-6, against Jaime/ Kedzo.

The Hokies will return to action as they host William & Mary Friday, March 18 at 2:30 p.m.
