Tech faces Winthrop, ETSU
Hokies take two-match win streak into weekend home matches

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team, ranked No. 60 nationally and winners of two straight matches, will serve as host to No. 66 Winthrop and East Tennessee State this weekend at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. The Winthrop contest is scheduled for Sat., March 12 at 11 a.m., and the ETSU match will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

Tech (7-6) is coming off two easy wins in Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The Hokies shut out Connecticut, 7-0, and dominated Valaparaiso, 7-0. In the Valpo contest, the Hokies dropped only one total game in the six singles matches.

The Hokies are led by Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), ranked No. 120 nationally in singles, and Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt).

Winthrop is 10-8 following a 6-1 loss to NC State on Wednesday in Hilton Head, S.C. Tech leads the series, 7-1, with the Eagles.

East Tennessee State is 4-5 and will host Belmont on Friday and Lipscomb on Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference matches, before heading to Blacksburg. The Hokies lead the series, 26-2, and Tech won last year’s match, 5-2, in Blacksburg.

Following this weekend’s action, Tech will return to the courts for the final non-conference match of year on March 18 when the Hokies play host to William & Mary at 2:30 p.m.
