CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Tech managed to pull a big upset in doubles but the depth of No. 8 Virginia proved to be too much as the Cavaliers defeated the No. 68 Hokies, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the Boars Head Sports Club. Virginia improved to 12-2 on the year and 1-1 in the ACC, while the Hokies fell to 5-6 and 1-2 in the conference.

The Cavaliers took two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day and captured all of the six singles matches in the victory.

In doubles, the Tech duo of Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt)/Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) pulled off a major upset with their, 8-6, win in the No. 1 doubles match over Virginia’s 11th-ranked Emily Fraser/Hana Tomljanovic. The Hokies were not as fortunate in the other two doubles contest as Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.)/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) lost, 8-4, at No. 2 against 49th-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh/Erin Vierra and Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.)/Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerpen, Belgium) fell, 8-1, at No. 3 to 35th-ranked Maria Fuccillo/Rashmi Teltumbde.

In singles, Hamza lost, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 to 50th-ranked Fraser, Blakely, ranked No. 120, fell, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 versus 42nd-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh and Ivanovic lost, 6-1, 6-2, in her No. 3 contest against No. 97 Tomljanovic. Elsewhere, Johnson dropped the No. 4 match, 7-5, 6-1, to 82nd-ranked Erin Vierra, Betts lost the No. 5 contest, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, versus Maria Fuccillo and Isel Martinez-Martinez Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) fell, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 to Caryssa Peretz.

The Hokies will travel to Aquadillia, Puerto Rico over spring break for two matches on March 9 against Connecticut (11 a.m.) and Valparaiso (4 p.m.).
