BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team will return to action following a 11-day break this weekend with tough matches at No. 23 Virginia Commonwealth and No. 8 Virginia. The VCU match is scheduled for Sat., March 5 at 11 a.m., in Richmond and will be followed by a Sun., March 6 match at 1 p.m., versus the Cavaliers in Charlottesville.
Tech (5-4), No. 68 in this week’s ITA national rankings, has a current three-match winning streak after defeating No. 57 Maryland (4-3), UMBC (7-0) and Davidson (7-0) two weekends ago. Tech is led by Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.), ranked No. 120 nationally, and Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt). Blakely is 16-7 overall in singles while Hamza is 6-3 in dual matches playing in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Virginia Commonwealth (13-1) picked up a pair of 4-3 victories last weekend in State College, Pa. defeating Penn State and No. 38 Princeton. The Rams, winners of eight-straight matches, are led by No. 107 Alex Bara who is 13-3 overall and 8-0 in dual singles matches.
Virginia (10-2) dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 9 Notre Dame in the Blue-Grey Invitational in Montgomery, Ala. last weekend. The Cavaliers defeated No. 48 Depaul (4-0) and No. 43 Ohio State (4-1) on the way to the final. UVa features three nationally-ranked singles players including No. 42 Lindsey Hardenbergh, No. 82 Erin Vierra and No. 97 Hana Tomljanovic. The Cavaliers also have three ranked doubles combinations in No. 11 Emily Fraser/Tomljanovic, No. 35 Maria Fuccillo/Rashmi Teltumbde and No. 49 Hardenbergh/Vierra.
Following this weekend’s activity, Tech will head to Puerto Rico to play on March 9 against Connecticut (11 a.m.) and Valparaiso (4 p.m.).
