BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team swept the UMBC Terriers 7-0 in its first of two matches on Sunday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus. This was Tech’s first sweep of the 2011 season as the Hokies move to 3-4 on the year and the Terriers drop to 4-4.

Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) claimed the first singles victory of the day for the Hokies when she defeated UMBC’s Heidi Danielsson 6-2, 6-3 in the four spot.

Tech continued to roll when Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) took a six-spot win over Josefin Stange –Johnson, 6-1, 6-2. The win was almost immediately followed by a No. 1 victory from Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) as she defeated Carmen Jackman, 6-1, 6-1.

Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) tacked on another victory for the Hokies when she took the five spot from Emily Mannix, 6-4, 6-3, and despite coming down to the wire in the first set, Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerp, Belgium) skated through the second set to inch the Hokies closer to a singles sweep when she downed UMBC’s Julia Gragera-Cano, 7-6, 6-1 in the three spot.

Putting the finishing touches on the sweep for Tech was Martha Blakey (Jr., Reading, Pa.) in the second spot. She took the final victory of the day, topping Kim Berghaus, 7-5, 6-3 to round out singles play.

The Hokies swept the doubles competition as Hazma/ Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) topped Jackman/ Gragera-Cano, 8-1, in the top spot. Next came an 8-3 victory in the second spot for Betts/ Ivanovic over UMBC’s Hadji/ Mannix. Rounding out doubles play was Katie Blow (Jr., Richmond, Va.)/ Emily Lauten (So., Marietta, Ga.) in the three spot. The pair topped Berghaus/Danielsson 8-5 to seal the team victory and earn the doubles point.

Tech will take on Davidson this afternoon at 5 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
