Tech defeats No. 57 Maryland, 4-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech snapped a four-match losing streak and recorded its first ACC win of the young season with a 4-3 win over No. 57 Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. Tech improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, while Maryland fell to 5-2 and 0-2 in the conference.
Tech, which had lost three straight matches by a 4-3 count, took two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day and split the six singles contests for the victory.
Leading 1-0, the Hokies extended the advantage as Shannon Betts (Jr., Newnan, Ga.) blanked Jordan Hansbrough, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5. Maryland got on the scoreboard as Holly Johnson (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) lost, 6-3, 6-1. at No. 3 to Ana Belzunce.
Isel Martinez-Marcos (Fr., Esparreguera, Spain) gave Tech a 3-1 lead with her, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, win at No. 6 versus Welma Luus. The Terps narrowed the Tech lead to 3-2 as Martha Blakely (Jr., Reading, Pa.) lost, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 versus Jordaan Sanford. The Hokies clinched the win as Tea Ivanovic (Fr., Antwerp, Belgium) took a tight No. 4 match, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2, over Julie Huschke. Yasmin Hamza (Sr., Cairo, Egypt) lost the final match, 6-7, 6-2, 7-6 (6) at No. 1 to Christina Sanchez.
Tech opened the day by winning the doubles point as Blakely/Courtney Rauscher (So., Evans, Ga.) defeated Hansbrough/Huschke, 8-1, at No. 2 and Ivanovic/Martinez-Marcos won the clincher at No. 3, 8-5, over Belzunce/Luus. Hamza/Johnson dropped their No. 1 match, 8-5, to Sanchez/Sanford.
The Hokies return to action on Sun., Feb. 20 with matches against Maryland-Baltimore County (9 a.m.) and Davidson (5 p.m.)
